How it works

What flattening a form does
In a fillable PDF, every field is a separate interactive object sitting on top of the page. Flattening draws the current value of each field straight onto the page and removes the interactive object. The page looks the same, but there is nothing left to click into, retype or tick again.
Only form fields are flattened. Other annotations, such as sticky notes and highlights, are left as they are; use Remove PDF Annotations if you want those gone. Fields that carry a cryptographic signature are not preserved. The work is done in your browser, and you download a new copy while your original stays unchanged.

Sending a completed registration form
Lock your answers before emailing a school or club enrolment form, so the copy on file matches what you submitted.

If a filled-in form prints with empty boxes from some printers or viewers, flatten it first and print the result.
Quotes and order forms
A supplier can freeze prices and quantities in a quote before sending it, so the customer cannot change a figure by mistake.

Keep a fixed snapshot of what was submitted, separate from the editable template it came from.
Flatten, remove annotations or protect: which one do you need
These three jobs sound alike but do different things, and mixing them up is the usual reason a locked file turns out not to be locked.
- Flatten PDF fixes the values of form fields into the page. It does not touch comments or highlights.
- Remove PDF Annotations deletes comments, sticky notes and markup. It does not flatten form fields unless you choose to remove them.
- Protect PDF adds a password and permissions using encryption, but permission limits are only respected by cooperating software.
- If you are still filling the form, Fill PDF Form lets you flatten as you save, which saves a second pass.
Supported formats

A PDF without form fields has nothing to flatten and will look unchanged.
Good to know
- Flattening cannot be undone in the new file. Keep the editable original if you may need to correct a value.
- It is not a security measure. Flattening stops casual edits, but anyone with a PDF editor can still draw over the page. For passwords and permissions, use Protect PDF.
- Fields that carry a cryptographic signature are not preserved, so flatten before any certified signing, not after.
- Comments, highlights and other non-form annotations stay as they are.

What does flattening a PDF do?
It converts interactive form fields into fixed page content. The values you entered remain visible, but the fields can no longer be clicked, edited or cleared.
Can I undo flattening?
Not in the flattened copy, because the fields no longer exist there. Keep your original editable file and flatten a copy of it.
Are comments and highlights flattened too?
No. Only form fields are flattened. Other annotations are left as they are, and can be deleted with Remove PDF Annotations.
Does flattening keep a digital signature valid?
No. Fields that carry a cryptographic signature are not preserved. If you need a certified signature, apply it after flattening, using the software that issues it.
Is my form uploaded anywhere?
No. Flattening happens in your browser, so the personal details typed into the form stay out of any upload.
